According to [Lippmann, 1922] (Clausen, 2006, 43), “In the great blooming, buzzing confusion of the outer world, we pick out what our culture has already defined for us, and we tend to perceive that which we have picked out in the form stereotyped for us by our culture.”

Communication is part of intercultural communication, and in order to communicate effectively, it is important to use language sufficiently. Also culture is part of intercultural communication, Matsumoto(2008) defined culture as “a meaning and information system that is transmitted across generations.” Thus culture influence on perception can be explained by three steps consisting of selection, organization and interpretation.

High and Low Context Communication

This context refers to how people communicate in different cultures. To get the difference, according to Hooker, J (2008), “In high-context communications, messages cannot be understood without a great deal of background information. Low-context communication spells out more of the information explicitly in the message.”

Understanding what your international colleagues are high or low context will help in adapting to communication style to build stronger relationship between them. To understand these cross-cultural training is essential.

Display rule that decide when and what, 3. their interpretation.
