Introduction

The two contemporary theories of leadership which I will be discussing today are Transformational Leadership and Leader member exchange theory (LMX).

Transformational Leadership

According to Bass, transformational leadership typically engage in several categories of behavior, which enhances the followers’ motivation and performance (Brent J. Goertzen). According to this theory, transformational leaders have the ability to achieve the following three things;

1.Make the followers understand the importance of a task and its outcome.

2.Influence the follows to let go of their personal interests for the sake of the greater good of the organization.

3.Direct and guide followers towards higher order needs.

This helps in creating an understanding with the followers, while allowing them to feel more involved and confident in their abilities, and also builds a strong trust in the leader.

Leader Member Exchange Theory (LMX)

On the other hand the Leader Member Exchange Theory proposes that the manner in which a leader influences his or her followers is dependent upon the kind of relationship he or she has with them. If the leader and member are on good terms with each other and they like each other, then they will help each other out when in need, and have each other’s back. Whereas, if they do not get along with each other, then discrepancies may arise and the team may not be able to function well at all.

Health care organizations where the management follows the LMX theory are bound to face a lot of problems, as physicians need to work together, and the lives of people are in their hands. If they are not on good terms with each other, then some situations may become foul. On the other hand, the transformational leadership may be more suited for such organizations

As employees who feel that the interest of the organization are in tune with theirs’ and the leader is able to make them understand the importance of what they do, and why they should always focus on the greater cause rather than their own interests, then the organization is likely to flourish.
