PSBC Project 3

Project报告代写 In this project, the total sales figures of three common products ( Bread, Salad and Lettuce) from a supermarket are analysed.

In this project, the total sales figures of three common products ( Bread, Salad and Lettuce) from a supermarket are analysed. The data are stored in a comma-separated values (CSV) file, salesfig.csv. The first few lines look like the following 1:

Date, MaxTemp, MinTemp, Bread, Salad, Lettuce
01/01/2015, 13, 8, 748, 424, 1125
02/01/2015, 11, 2, 733, 410, 1066
03/01/2015, 5, -1, 744, 404, 1085
04/01/2015, 5, -3, 638, 337, 930
05/01/2015, 8, 4, 675, 367, 1002
06/01/2015, 8, 2, 691, 376, 1005

The columns of the data file are Date (from 2015-1-1 to 2017-12-31), Highest Daily Temperature, Lowest Daily Temperature, and the sales number for the three products (the actual units do not matter in this project).

Question 1. As shown in Figure 1, the sales data of bread exhibit a periodic linear trend during the first few weeks of Year 2015, despite some random fluctuations 2. By assuming that the data is a linear function inside each period (thus characterised by the slope and the average), we want to work out the slope for each product. Furthermore, the slope for each product is assumed to be the same for all periods, while the averages could change from one period to another.  Project报告代写

Because of the random fluctuations and zero sales data due to closure of the supermarket 3, not all data have to be used to estimate the slope. In general, 85% of the data should be enough (the percentage could be changed, depending on your argument), and the resulting slope for each product will not change significantly once the obvious outliers (i.e zero sales figures) are eliminated. The problems and the solutions for the resulting slopes could formulated in many different ways, for instance least square fitting, regression, etc. Do keep your exposition simple (to be understood by anyone who have finished first year probability and statistics).

Question 2. It is believed that correlations exist between the temperature and the sales number of certain products (calculated using the built-in command corrcoef). Information like this is critical to supply chain management, as potential variations could be predicted in

1If this file is opened in a professional software like Microsoft Excel instead of a text editor, the format of some entries may be slightly different

2Other two products or the same product during other time periods show similar periodic linear trends. Project报告代写

3Zero sales data could appear in certain days in March/April and the end of December for each year

  1. Pay attention to the data types (certain operations are allowed on the right types of data), and the distinction between curly brackets {} and parenthesis ().
  2. Tryto plot the data to get insights, and to understand basic features like the number of days inside a period, and those days with zero sales  But do not generate too many (and repeated) meaningless figures in your report. Try to support your approach and argument based on the data, instead of looking for the ”correct” answer.

  4. Avoid copying (too many) sentences directly from the project description, and try to restate the problem with your own words or examples if possible. Project报告代写
