Sex Differences

Paper details:

For this paper summarize a scholarly article of your choice that reports empirical research on sex differences. Please follow the steps below:

1. Find a journal article (a primary source) that reports research on a topic pertaining to sex differences. (See tutorial at bottom of page if you need help with this step.)

Hint in Psychology of Gender (4th ed.) by Vicki S. Helgeson (ISBN-13: 9780205050185. Chapter 4 in the book deals with observed sex differences in a variety of domains (e.g., math and verbal ability, empathy, helping, aggression, sexuality, etc.). Perusing this chapter may help you to choose a topic to search for in the library database.

Important: Please note that the article you choose for your summary must be a peer-reviewed, scholarly article. Do not use an article written for the popular media, even if it reports on scientific research.

You may choose any topic you find interesting as long as you satisfy the following criteria:

(1) The topic relates to sex differences
(2) The article reports the results of a study
(3) The article has been published within the last 10 years

*Be sure not to choose a review article which summarizes the results of many different studies.*

If you have any questions about whether or not an article is suitable, please ask!

Note: If your article contains more than one study (this is fairly common), you only have to summarize one of the studies.

2. Write a summary of the article in your own words as if you were describing the article to a friend or family member. In your summary be sure to answer the following questions:
What was the research about and why did the author(s) do it? Be sure to clearly state the hypothesis.
How was the research conducted (e.g., participants, method, procedure)?
What type of research method was employed (e.g., correlational study, experiment)? How do you know?
Describe the results. Did the results support the hypothesis?
Describe any limitations of the study. What changes or improvements could have been made? (There are always limitations…if you can’t find any, look harder!)
How might these findings be relevant to your listener’s (or your own) life? In other words, why does this research matter?
Please provide a proper APA-style citation for your research article.
